If hiking is your obsession, you’ll be in your element. As Pagosa Springs is surrounded by three million acres of natural terrain and wilderness.

The San Juan Mountains boast some of the best day hiking trails in Colorado. Most of the trails are best explored during the late Spring, through summer and early Autumn months. June to end of September. The upper high mountain trails may be still snow covered in June but clear by July. The scenery is dramatic, taking you to the upper reaches, where you can take in spectacular mountain lakes, alpine meadows blanketed by wildflowers.

There are trail levels for all abilities from the easy one mile trail to Piedra Falls to the Continental Divide Trail, which follows the actual Continental Divide as it ranges up to 12,000 feet at Piedra Pass and down the other side.  There are numerous waterfalls in the area; some of the best known are Four Mile Falls, and Treasure Falls. There is a Forest Service office in town with maps and information.

Dip down into valleys, and soar up to sky high elevations! Breathe in the fresh air of this glorious countryside, and then head back to Dancing Bear Retreat and soak away any sore muscles in our hot tub or at the world famous Hot Springs.
