Fall is Fabulous in Pagosa!

Summer is winding down and we are expecting a beautiful fall season this year in Pagosa Springs. With the advent of cooler weather, and the crowds thinning out, this is a great time to visit our part of the Rocky Mountains. There’s so much to do while you’re staying at Dancing Bear Retreat and here are a few ideas.

Fishing

With the cooler weather, the fishing heats up as the water temps fall. There are four private stocked lakes available to our guests at Dancing Bear Retreat, with Hatcher Lake an easy walk nearby. There are two fishing specialty stores in town with waders and float tubes for rent or you can fish from one of the piers or lake shore. There are numerous other lakes in the area along with the San Juan River, the Piedra River, the East Fork and West Forks of the San Juan River. Also nearby is Williams Lake with beautiful mountain scenery and stocked with both trout and northern pike. Or you can venture a bit further away and near Wolf Creek Pass is the Rio Grande River . There is more than enough water to satisfy even the pickiest fisherman.

Hiking

Pagosa Springs has easy access to all levels of hiking trails, from an easy one mile walk to Pagosa Falls to the challenging climb up Pagosa Peak. The scenery along these mountain trails is simply beautiful with canyons, gorges and streams along the way. There are a number of waterfalls on marked trails and even some isolated hot springs in the mountain forests, also marked on trail maps. Pagosa is the perfect place to pack a lunch and hit the trail for a day of unparalleled beauty in the San Juan National Forest or higher up in the Wemienuche Wilderness. And if you’d rather have a horse do the walking for you, there are several stables and outfitters that are eager to take you up into the mountains on a trusty steed.

So much to do!

If fishing and hiking don’t appeal to you, there is still so much to do in the fall in Pagosa! There are beer festivals and competitions, balloon rides, art galleries to stroll through with shopping in downtown. The 14th annual Mountain Chile Cha Cha competition is the weekend of September 28, 2019. The Aspens will be in full color in late September and there’s no better way to see them than the train ride from Durango to Silverton on the Durango – Silverton train; or the Cumbres – Toltec train from Chama over the Cumbres Pass. There are also a number of scenic drives from Pagosa to view the glorious Aspens in the fall. The beautiful 27 hole Pagosa Lakes golf course will be welcome sight to the golfer in your group .

The world famous Hot Springs in downtown Pagosa are always a welcome respite. There are a number of springs to soak in of various temperatures and the sulfuric waters are said to have healing properties. What a great way to unwind after a long day of hiking or fishing or horseback riding. Dancing Bear Retreat also has a large hot tub for your soaking pleasure after a long day.

The days will be sunny and warm with cool nights and starry skies. With our two indoor fireplaces and one on the deck and a fire pit on the large patio Dancing Bear Retreat is a great place to end your day with a glass of wine as you gaze out over the valley and mountains. This large home is the perfect blend of comfortable luxury and is just waiting for you!
